Republic Day marks the Time on which when India’s temperament came into force on January 26, 1950. “Long ages ago we made a tryst with lot, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not fully or in full limit, but very essential. At the stroke of the midnight stound, when the world sleeps, India will awake to world and privileges”. These were the historic words of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru.
Republic Day or Gantantra Diwas is a day of great pride for India and all Indians. While the country achieved freedom from the British rule in 1947, it was only on January 26, 1950, that  India completed its transition to becoming an independent republic. Our constitution came into effect on this day in 1950 and replaced the Government of India Act (1935).

On the occasion of Republic Day, the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, had said, “We have inherited no old enmities. Our republic enters the world stage, therefore, free from pride and prejudice, humbly believing and striving that in international as well as internal affairs our statesmen may be guided by the teachings of the Father of our Nation — tolerance, understanding non-violence and resistance to aggression.”

Every year, the Republic Day is celebrated in a grand manner in Delhi, at the Rajpath before the President of India. Thousands gather to watch the ceremonious Republic Day parade. The three wings of the Indian military – the Army, Navy and the Air Force – put forth a grand show. The aim of the three-day Republic Day celebrations in Delhi is to showcase India’s Defence Capability, Cultural and Social Heritage.

The Constituent Assembly of India took two years eleven months and eighteen days to make a Constitution for India. The consideration of the Draft Constitution took 114 days. The Constituent Assembly finished it on the 26th of November, 1949. This new Constitution of India came into force on the 26th of January, 1950.
According to it, India became the Sovereign Democratic Republic. Since then the 26th of January in every year is observed as our Republic day. Republic means a state having a Government of the people, by the people and for the people. People are the real function-head of all power. So, the Republic Day is so sacred for us.
