The Spirit of Adventure || True Meaning of Adventure

Meaning of adventure

Adventure means the act of going out in search of the new and the unknown. True adventure lies in facing all the troubles and risks of running after the unknown merely for the joy of it. it sends out a challenge to our spirit of heroism. It appeals to our strength of mind. The call of the unknown thrills us and excites us. Is there any risk in trying to remove the veil that keeps something hidden from our knowledge?
We will take that risk and bring it within the range of our knowledge. Is the difficulty that lies in the way of discovering the unknown too great? we will overcome the difficulty and triumph over all obstacles. That is the spirit. Dangers and difficulties are only the whetstones that sharpen the edge of our endeavor.

The Spirit of Adventure
The spirit of adventure is essential to the West. There it is manifested in a variety of ways. People go out mountaineering, or on voyages of exploration, or in quest of new knowledge. So great is their love of adventure that they are not afraid to sacrifice their lives in its pursuit. The snow-capped Himalayas or the ice-bound Antarctic or the wilds of Africa or the deserts of Central Asia hold no terror for them.

And now men are being hurled out into the outer spaces where the earth' gravitation ceases to act, and are dreaming of adventuring into the Moon, where life is extinct and the conditions for life do not exist. It is not always that they go out on these arduous expeditions for the sake of increasing knowledge; often it is only the joy and thrill of doing what no one else has done. This is of the essence of the spirit of adventure. Columbus voyaging across strange and unknown seas or the bold astronauts hurled into the outer spaces are a testimony to man's eternal spirit of adventure.

Adventure Quotes
There is no doubt that adventure has a great effect on a man's character. It makes a man brave and hardy and of an indomitable temper. It makes him master of his destiny. It teaches him to be bold and yet cautious, enterprising and yet calculating, daring but not foolhardy. There is something of the gambler's instinct in one who seeks the unknown; he must take chances, it is true, but he must never be foolishly rash.

He must know how to balance his means against his ends. he must be vigilant and resourceful. An abundance of animal spirits is not enough, nor is undisciplined wastage of energy to be praised. An adventurer's character undergoes an all-round development. He is a much better man after an adventure than he was before it.

The spirit of adventure has to be fostered. We often love life so that we are not anxious to risk it. Yet it is good to forget about life and death when one faces risks with courage and determination. It acts as a tonic and a stimulant. It adds a zest to life. It makes life worth living. It is good that a young man should go out now and then without any companions and entirely on his own initiative, and see the world for himself.

A writer writes most truly, "The adventurer is an outlaw. The adventure must start with running away from home." It is this dare-devil spirit that hardens character and keeps the mind in a state of perpetual unrest. In sum, it reacts to the character and the outlook of a nation. It is a constant reminder to us that life is something more than keeping to the line of safety; life is a quest itself. It is the one thing in life which is self-complete and self-sufficing, for it needs nothing else to keep it alive. "The life of the adventurer is a practice in the art of the impossible."
